The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has announced that it will conduct a screening exercise for Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Nkanu Onnoghen on Wednesday 1st March as substantive CJN.

This development was announced today during a plenary session by Senate President Bukola Saraki.

It will be recalled that on February 8 Mr Onnoghen’s name was forwarded, few days to the expiration of his tenure as Acting CJN, for confirmation as a substantive CJN by acting President Yemi Osinbajo.

Mr Onnoghen was appointed the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria on November 10 by President Muhammadu Buhari, following the retirement of Mahmud Mohammed.

February 10 Mr. Onnoghen's tenure expired and he was due to vacate his role as acting chief justice unless he was confirmed.

Congratulations in advance Mr Onnoghen.
