The third round school-based deworming exercise organized by the Government of Cross River State as a Preventative Chemotherapy against Neglected Tropical Diseases has been concluded.
The exercise was targeted at school aged children between the ages of 5-14 years took place in primary and secondary schools across the State saw the children receive preventive care against NTDs. NTDs are very endemic to Sub Saharan Africa, and they include Schistosomiasis, Onchocerciasis, Lymphatic Filariasis amongst others.
The Honorable Commissioner for Health, Dr Inyang Asibong, assured parents and guardians that everything is under control and there is no need to panic whilst authenticating the deworming exercise following the purported rumors of children being injected with Monkeypox Virus a fortnight ago that delayed the exercise.
She said the State Health team embarked on Statewide sensitization exercise to create awareness on the benefits of the prophylaxes being administered to the children and also quell the Monkeypox rumors which halted the exercise for two weeks.
The exercise was organized by the Cross River State Government in collaboration with Evidence Action, and had in attendance the Commissioner for Education; Hon. Godwin Etta, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health; Dr Joseph Bassey, the State NTD Coordinator; Dr Thomas Igbang, the Director of Admin MOE; Mr Chris Abia and the RTI State Program Manager; Mrs. Helen Nwokedi amongst others.
