The distinguished senator representing Cross River Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly recently admonished young people to take their future by their hands as "nobody gives you a chance, you take it". He stated this while delivering a keynote address at the occasion of Cross River Young Emerging Political leaders forum held at Transcorp hotel, Calabar.
The senator who started contesting for political offices at the age of 32 noted that it is possible to achieve great success without necessarily having so much money in stock. Sen. Owan further admonished young people to make sacrifices and struggle for whatever they desire through building of capacity for service. According to him "It is not all about money, I didn't run because I had money, I ran because I wanted to serve".
Sen. Owan further admonished the youths not to see positions as the only means of attaining leadership. He said "For me, the defining element for leadership is not position, it is a function of service. The responsibilities that you take are the underlining principles of leadership".
According to him, he demonstrates this act of service through his numerous empowerment programmes, openness to all through response to text messages and calls as well as his dedication to assigned legislative duties at the Upper Chamber.
He commended the organisers of the event and advocated that it should be made an annual event as it will help reinvigorate the political consciousness of young people and propel them towards taking over the mantle of leadership in the near future.
Highlights of the event includes panel discussions featuring the senator in company of the speaker Cross River House of Assembly, Hon. John Gaul Lebo, DG, of CRPHCDA, Dr. Beta Edu among others.
