There were men, there are men, and there will be men: Hon Akiba is one of the men to watch because of what he’s evolving into gradually. So, what follows is an abridged profile of Hon Bassey Ekpenyong Akiba.
Birth
Hon Bassey Ekpenyong Akiba was born on the 12th day of December 1969 to the family of late Elder Chief & Mrs Ekpenyong Akiba Ekpenyong of Akpap Okoyong in Odukpani LGA of Cross River State.
Education
He began his education in Bishop King Memorial Primary School Calabar and Government Secondary School Creek Town and later proceeded to IBB College of Agriculture Obubra where he
obtained an OND in Forestry Management; thereafter he was admitted into the University of Calabar where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics/ Statistics.
Public Service
Before his election as Chairman of Odukpani LGA in 2004 he was formerly an Extension Officer in Cross River State Agricultural Project in 1995 and later appointed Personal Assistant to Commissioner for Agriculture and Works respectively between 2002 and 2004. Hon Akiba was reelected in 2007 as the first two term Chairman of Odukpani LGA. What a feat!
Achievements
During his tenure in council he had the following area of focus:
1. Infrastructural development: for instance, road rehabilitation, rehabilitation of zonal offices, drilling of boreholes, culvert construction, etc.
2. Revenue generation through the construction of Odukpani Park Complex, and modern market shades to mention but a few.
3. Ensuring security of lives and property in Odukpani through the establishment of conflict resolution agency and crisis management committees.
4. Empowerment of community and individuals by accessing international opportunities. For instance, WASSR programmes including MDGs, thereby training youths and women in various skills and ventures.
Stint at 8th C/River House of Assembly
Honourable Bassey Ekpenyong Akiba was elected as Member representing Odukpani State Constituency at the 8th Cross River State House of Assembly, CRSHA, in 2015 and is presently serving in that capacity.
He has been Chairman House Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources, and currently Chairman House Committee on Solid Mineral Development. He’s also Vice Chairman House Committee on Tourism and Member Committees on Works, Transport, Commerce and Environmental Development.
As a legislator in chamber, he has sponsored bills for consideration as law, he also deals more on motions as it concerns the needs of his people worthy of mention are:
*A Bill on the Establishment of Commercial Agriculture Agency
*Cross River State Solid Minerals Development Board Bill 2018
*Motion on Resettlement of Ikot Offiong people, in Odukpani LGA
*Motion that concerns crisis between Akwa Ibom and Cross River State which he moved on the floor of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly during a joint session of the two Assemblies
*Motion on Netim and Odukpani Qua Crisis
*Motion on provision of pontine services along Atan Onoyom in Eburutu Community and several others. 
*He also sponsored and co-sponsored several bills worthy of note is a bill for the establishment of commercial agriculture.
As a legislator outside the chamber his representation is based on engagement of his consultation with his constituents through town hall meetings, and oversight functions.
He introduced an economic and educational support programme for his constituents based on individual demand and concern.
Hon Akiba popularly called Orlando is a grassroot politician, this is evident in his emergence as the flagbearer of the APC in the forthcoming national assembly elections to represent Calabar Municipality and Odukpani, Federal Constituency. He’s currently the Minority Leader of the 8th CRSHA.
He is a receiver of several awards both locally, nationally and internationally. He is happily married to Mrs Asi Bassey Akiba and the marriage is blessed with children.
