Results from the just concluded Nigerian Aids Investigation and Impact Survey (NAIIS) has shown that Cross River State has a 1.7% HIV prevalence rate indicating a massive 85% reduction from the 6.6% prevalence rate of 2014. It is worthy of note here that despite being sandwiched by Akwa Ibom (5.5%) and Benue (5.3%) making them the States with the highest and 2nd highest prevalence rate in Nigeria respectively.
'We have received the official HIV prevalence standing of the country and Cross River State has improved remarkably. This shows the level of commitment shown by His Excellency, Sen. (Prof.) Ben Ayade, in ensuring the health and well-being of the citizens are in check.
Calabar Municipality is the first LGA in Nigeria to achieve the first 90:90 and are on the verge to achieving the last 90. What this means is that 90% of people living with HIV in Calabar Municipal already know their status and 90% of these people have been placed on anti-retroviral therapy, while the third 90 means people on anti-retroviral therapy will have viral suppression.' -Dr. Inyang Asibong
Studies have also shown that the south-south region has the highest prevalence rate in the country, and Cross River State has the lowest in the region.
