The self-styled Department of State Services, DSS formally known as State Security Services, SSS has come under fire for apprehending 56 alleged prostitutes in Calabar, Cross River NEGROIDHAVEN can say authoritatively. Some Nigerians are of the opinion that the elite security outfit should rather address rising insecurity reported around the country.
According social influencer @Ogundamisi, 'Okay so DSS so not busy gathering information about kidnappers and terrorists that they now focus on arresting "prostitutes"?' Edet Iyamba General a nitezen on Cross River cyberspace, said 'Kidnappers and bandits are wrecking havoc across the country ..DSS & NPF are busy raiding clubs, brothels & prostitutes Inn.' Another social media user, Archibong Hashbury Efefiom 'DSS have left critical security issues in the state and are busy chasing armless girls….. i don't in any way support prostitution but the DSS can chase them if the state is crime free
"its like chasing rats while your house is on fire"'.
Continuing, @ejyvik said, 'Thank God that we are finally getting back our normal @ogundamisi who always say it as it is, DSS woldon on internal prostitute instead of security'. And @oluwatobishafe said 'U can imagine CIA and FBI arresting stripers in Las Vegas. Who is doing these to us. We keep falling our hands by ourselves. Damn it!. Followed by @thean999 'They're saying, we may not have security, but we must have decency.
Ibi pẹlẹbẹ latí mọọ̀lẹ̀'. While @habujabbo said 'What is wrong with Nigerian security, deploying their resources towards harmless prostitutes leaving criminals to enjoy terrorizing us freely?'
According findings about the responsibility of the SSS, it was learnt that, the security outfit is an intelligence gathering facility with the mandate to provide leadership and support to other security facilities in the country.
Wikipedia captures this information thus: 'The State Security Service (SSS), self-styled as the Department of State Services (DSS), is the primary domestic intelligence agency of Nigeria. It is primarily responsible for intelligence gathering within the country and for the protection of senior government officials, particularly the President and state governors.
'The mission of the SSS is to protect and defend the Federal Republic of Nigeria against domestic threats, to uphold and enforce the criminal laws of Nigeria, and to provide leadership and criminal justice services to both federal and state law-enforcement organs. The SSS is also charged with the protection of the President, Vice President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, State Governors, their immediate families, other high ranking government officials, past presidents and their spouses, certain candidates for the offices of President and Vice President, and visiting foreign heads of state and government.
'The SSS has constantly adapted to various roles necessitated by evolving security threats in Nigeria including counter-terrorism and counter-insurgent.'

My question is: is sex working now a crime in Nigeria? If yes, according to what laws/constitution? If no, what's the DSS' justification for the apprehension? Secondly, is the DSS not distracted by this new found role especially in the face of rising insecurity and banditry in the country? Nigerians seem confused at the seeming new role of the DSS.
