The Speaker, Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Eteng William has described as “regrettable”, the communal violence in his domain between the people of Afaben/Ajere
and Aduma in Mkpani community of Yakurr local government area which has claimed lives, many injured and properties destroyed.
Reacting to the violent clashes, Rt. Hon. Williams said for brothers and sisters of the same community who have lived together for over 400 years to resort to bloodshed over misunderstandings that can be resolved peacefully, is worrisome.
According to the Speaker, “My heart has been very disturbed since I got the report that my brothers and sister back home have taken arms against each other. No culture support the disregard for the sanctity of life,” adding that "peaceful coexistence is necessary for the progress of any community and its wellbeing."
He explained that the issue of chieftaincy tussle in Mkpani has lingered for a long time now and he has remained neutral while always suing for peace and dialogue from both parties.
“I have held several meetings with elders and stakeholders from both villages to embrace peace and communal harmony. Violence cannot be an alternative to peace. On the contrary, reliance on violence leads to ultimate self-destruction. Violence is an ill wind that blows nobody any good.
Williams, wholeheartedly condemned the allegation by some groups that political leaders were fueling the crisis. He, therefore, called on all political leaders to throw away their political allegiance at this time and unite with all sincerity of purpose to surmount this mess.
While deeply sympathizing with families of those who either lost their loved ones, injured or properties destroyed.
He used the opportunity to commend the Cross River State Governor and Chief Security Officer of the State, His Excellency, Sen. Prof. Ben Ayade for his rapid response to the crisis and for swinging into action by drafting security operatives to douse the tension in the area.
Mr. Speaker appealed for peace to return to the community while admonishing the people to develop the spirit of tolerance and patience at all times.
