1st September 2020 witnessed the holding of the One Day Stakeholders Tripartite Security Summit in Bakassi local government organised by the 6th Bakassi Local Legislature under the leadership of Hon. Emmanuel Michael Effiong the Leader of the Bakassi 6th Legislature NEGROIDHAVEN can say authoritatively.
The ‘And Peace for Community and Human Development’-tagged event which took place at the Bakassi Event Center, Abakpa in Bakassi LGA arrived at 11-points communique bothering on peace and security, capacity building, values-system, employment, justice, collaboration etc.
The communique reads as follows:
1. The Cross River estuary (linking Akwa Ibom, Cameron and the Gulf of Guinea) should be manned by security operatives especially the Nigerian Navy Police
2. Government should look into the amnesty programme by reviewing the Terms of Agreement as it seems to be have been neglected
3. Local Government council being the closest to the people should come up with capacity building programme for training and empowerment/engagement of youths especially the ex-agitators
4. Traditional rulers especially the village heads should exercise proper security control of their respective villages while partnering with security agencies
5. Establishment of vigilante in various communities with support from the local government
6. Parents should properly groom their children/wards against fancying and identifying gangsterism/cultism in Bakassi
7. Create employment opportunities aimed at fostering peace and development in Bakassi
8. Regular security meetings should be expanded to include representatives of youth and other interest groups
9. Demolition of property of those found to be culpable in crimes such as kidnapping, Child Abuse, banditry, drug abuse etc
10. Joint military Taskforce to frequently patrol blackspots and address
11. Church leaders should preach sermons discouraging indigenes to involve in cultism, gangsterism/cultism and other similar vices.
Leader Effiong assured the audience that within three years, the 6th legislature will address insecurity to its standstill. Earlier in his welcome address, the Majority Leader of the Bakassi 6th Legislature and Chair of the Security Summit, Anselem Edet observed that ‘Bakassi has become the theatre of conflict’.
The security summit was well attended by local politicians, frontline traditional rulers, youth representatives, religious leaders, women groups, business class, NGO/CSO groups and designated security agencies.
