Akpabuyo – In an attempt to boost Akpabuyo Local Government Area’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), the Executive Chairman, Prince Effiom Bassey Effiong, has announced the revocation of all revenue-related contracts, agencies, consultancy services, and similar arrangements by 31st December 2024 NEGROIDHAVEN can report.
Speaking during a critical meeting this week with revenue staff, agents, and contractors at the council secretariat in Ikot Nakanda, Hon. Effiom expressed dissatisfaction with the persistent non-remittance of council levies by revenue agents and contractors, describing it as a hindrance to the development of the local government.
“We can be the best of friends and relate well, but when it comes to issues concerning IGR in Akpabuyo, I am very serious about it,” the Chairman stated, highlighting his commitment to financial accountability and improved revenue collection.
The Chairman explained that Akpabuyo faces significant challenges, including poor infrastructure, inadequate access to essential services, and limited funding for community development projects. He stressed that boosting IGR is vital to addressing these issues and positioning Akpabuyo as a leader in revenue generation within Cross River State.
To address these challenges, Hon. Effiom outlined plans to implement a streamlined revenue collection system to ensure transparency and efficiency. The revocation of existing contracts, he added, is a step toward achieving this goal.
During the meeting, revenue agents raised concerns about operational challenges, including insecurity at Esuk Mba Market and the lack of proper waste disposal facilities at Maternity Junction and Okon Oyom Market.
Responding, the Chairman assured them of his commitment to resolving these issues. “I will request dustbins from the Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA) to ensure proper waste management at the identified locations,” he said.
On the issue of insecurity, Hon. Effiom called on local youths and residents to take proactive steps in safeguarding their communities. “One can secure their own area better than an outsider. While the government is doing its best to curb insecurity, the youths must safeguard their territory and desist from collaborating with strangers to sabotage their own land,” he added.
The revenue agents expressed satisfaction with the Chairman’s directives and pledged to comply with the new measures to help achieve the council’s revenue goals.
Prince Ekpo Effiom, the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman, described the meeting as a bold step toward transparency and improved revenue generation in Akpabuyo. “The Chairman’s actions demonstrate his determination to tackle revenue challenges and ensure the council’s coffers are adequately funded for development projects,” the CPS said.
