The Abuja Court of Appeal has cleared former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Cross River-born Justice Walter Onnoghen, of his 2019 conviction by the Code of Conduct Tribunal on charges of false asset declaration. The court’s ruling effectively overturns the previous verdict, citing the resolution of legal issues that initially led to Onnoghen’s prosecution and conviction NEGROIDHAVEN can say.
The original conviction was delivered on April 18, 2019, by the tribunal chaired by Danladi Umar. In this latest judgment, Presiding Justice Abba Mohammed accepted a settlement reached between the federal government and Justice Onnoghen, ordering that Onnoghen’s four bank accounts, which had been seized, be returned to him.
Following the ruling, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Adegboyega Awomolo, representing 73 years old Onnoghen, expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and the Attorney General of the Federation for their roles in facilitating the case’s resolution.
