Cross Riverian to be Inaugurated Chief Justice of Nigeria today

Today 10th November, Biase, Cross River-born Justice Walter Nkanu Onnoghen will be inaugurated as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) howbeit in acting capacity pending Senate confirmation.

This is coming on the hills of the exit of the retiring CJN, Justice Mahmud Mohammed who has attained the mandatory age of 70 years.

Further information has it that the process of forwarding the name of Onnoghen to the Senate for confirmation by the President is in progress.

Onnoghen is currently the most senior justice of the Supreme Court and will be serving in acting capacity for three months until he is appointed by the President and  subject to confirmation by the Senate.

It will be recalled that both the National Judicial Council and the Federal Judicial Service Commission have recommended Onnoghen as the next CJN.

According to a source “All is set for the inauguration of Onnoghen as the acting CJN by President Muhammadu Buhari to avoid any vacuum in the Judiciary.

“He will be in charge until the process of his nomination and confirmation is completed by the presidency and the Senate.”

Onnoghen's inauguration will take place at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
