The Police at Force Headquarters, Abuja, have declared one Alhaji Usman Adamu wanted, following the death of one Miss Joy Odama, a 200 Level Mass Communication undergraduate of Cross River State University, said to have died in Abuja. Aside declaring Alhaji Adamu wanted, it was gathered that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Karmo, where the alleged murder took place (names withheld), has been queried, removed and transferred over what was described as “professional misconduct” over Joy’s death.
According to investigation, three girls, who visited the Alhaji’s house, were taken to hospital, with two of them unconscious and one dead. An autopsy has been carried out on the dead victim (Joy), but there is no result yet.
Contacted for comments, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Jimoh Moshood said: “The said Alhaji Adamu is on the run, but we are looking for him because he has a case to answer.” He disclosed that all Police Commands across the country have been alerted that the Alhaji is a suspect in the death of Miss Joy Odama and should be arrested if seen anywhere.
On the DPO, Moshood confirmed his query and removal, saying it was for inefficiency. The last time I saw my daughter —Mother Late Joy’s mother, Mrs Philomena Odama, in a petition entitled Call for Justice for the Murder of my Daughter, Joy Odama by Alhaji Usman Adamu, had said: “On December 18, 2016, one Elizabeth from Ogoja Local Government in Cross River State, who is my daughters’ friend, visited us and told Joy to accompany her to see one Alhaji Usman Adamu, who she said was a philanthropist. “She said the Alhaji lives in the same neighbourhood, precisely at Ibro Quarters, Old Karmo, Abuja.
Knowing Elizabeth as a long time friend and without any suspicion, she innocently followed her to the said Alhaji’s house. On getting there, my daughter called me that the Alhaji wants to see me. “I asked why and she said Alhaji wants to help with her education and that of other girls who live in the neighbourhood and are with their parents. “I quickly went to the house and Alhaji Usman promised to help in my daughter’s education and equally promised to get me a job with the NSCDC. We exchanged numbers and I left.
“Two days later, on December 20, 2016, Alhaji Usman called my daughter and said his house help was sick and that she should come and look after her, while he goes to get a doctor. “He also said he has called other girls to assist. Joy told me and I allowed her to go. That was the last time I saw my daughter alive. “The next morning, I called Joy and Alhaji Adamu’s phones several times without response. Eventually, when Alhaji Adamu picked his call, to my surprise, he pretended not to know who I was. “When I pressed further, he asked me ‘Did anything happen to Joy?’ At this point, I knew all was not well.
Karmo DPO ‘intervenes’ “My relatives and I decided to go to the Police. As we were about stepping out of the house, we saw two policemen in our house and they asked us to follow them to Karmo Police Station. “On getting there, the DPO informed us that the girls that went to Alhaji’s house were all unconscious; that one is not responding to treatment, while others are responding. “We requested to see Joy, but were turned down and asked to come the next day. We pressed further, but the DPO insisted we go home. “The next day, being December 22, I went back to the Police Station in the company of relatives and a lawyer.
To my utter shock, I was told my daughter was dead and had been taken to a mortuary. “We asked to know how, why and what led to Joy’s death and the DPO declined comments. “Our lawyer asked if the Alhaji has been arrested, but the DPO bluntly told us that as far as he is concerned, Alhaji is not culpable, no crime has been committed, that my daughter died of natural causes and he cannot arrest Alhaji.
