The distinguished lawmaker representing Cross River State Southern Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Chief Gershom Bassey, and eleven others have been described as ‘inactive’ at the floor of the 8th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria NegroidHaven can report authoritatively.
This allegation is contained in a 7th June 2017 publication of one of Nigeria’s online news platform, RipplesNigeria. Former President of the Senate, David Mark (Benue South), Buruji Kashamu (Ogun East), Jonah Jang (Plateau North), Philip Gyunka (Nasarawa North), Nelson Effiong (Akwa Ibom South), Jeremiah Useni (Plateau South), Joshua Dariye (Plateau Central), Abubakar Sani Danladi (Taraba North), Bashir Marafa (Taraba Central), Mustapha Sani (Niger South) and Tijjani Yahaya Kaura (Zamfara North), among others have been identified by the news repository as Senators who haven’t performed up to average. They barely make contributions on the floor of the Senate.
Beaming its searchlight on Sen. Bassey, RipplesNigeria observed that the distinguished Senator, who incidentally is the Vice Chairman of Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources(Upstream), is quite intelligent and demonstrates depth on issues; but, noted that Sen. Bassey hardly sponsors bills or motion.

According to RipplesNigeria, ‘Senator Gershom Bassey… Taken on a one on one interaction, Senator Bassey exudes an uncommon intelligence. He is deep and vast on any issue.
‘However, he is not active on the floor. He hardly sponsors bills or motions. At the committee level, he is a brain box. He played a critical role when the committee worked on the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB)’.
Further research by NegroidHaven has it that Sen. Bassey has embarked on a handful of constituency projects, some arguably completed. For instance, according to one of the Senator’s social media handlers, he has initiated some moves for Calabar Municipality Local Government Area, namely, ‘strong representation for the construction of the East-West Road as well as the Calabar-Lagos Railway line (proposed priority for 2017).’ He has embarked on a handful of constituency projects in his constituency.
