College of Education Academic Staff Union (COE ASU), Akamkpa the umbrella pressure group for teaching/researching staff of Cross River State College of Education (CRS COE), Akamkpa is most likely to embark on an indefinite strike action beginning from Monday, 26 February 2018 NegroidHaven has garnered.
The reason for this anticipated industrial action is the failure of the state government to pay seven months salaries arrears to new staff and seven years promotion arrears to old staff.
According to a text message reportedly issued to members of the Union by the Public Relations Officer of COEASU Akamkpa, Mr Oliver Ntui, the industrial action began Friday 23rd February. However, when our correspondent initiated a phone call across to Mr Ntui, he informed that the congress of the Union will ratify the decision in a meeting slated for 10AM today.

The text reads thus : 'Great Comrade, please be informed that strike commences with effect from today, Fri. 23/2/18. This follows government failure to pay any of the 7 months salaries arrears to new staff, and 7 years arrears of promotion to other staff. Kindly stay at home till further directive. Thanks, Oliver Ntui, PRO'.

It's surprising that arrears of salaries of new staff of over seven months and promotion arrears of seven years have not been paid to academic staff of the Union. Hmmm! This is totally condemnable and unacceptable. We will get to the root of the matter : has the state government paid and the management are yet to remit funds or hasn't the government paid? If yes, why is it taking this long?
