Senator Nelson Asuquo Effiong, the lawmaker representing Akwa Ibom State Southern Senatorial District in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has been slammed with multiple suits for threat to life, blackmail and failure to repay the sum of $10, 000 he borrowed from one Nsedu Bassey Onyile to fund his campaign in 2015 NegroidHaven has confirmed.
We gathered that Nsedu Onyile, a Nigerian who is based in the United States, has known the Senator for more than 10 years. Sometime in February 2015, the Senator approached her for a loan of Ten Thousand Dollars ($10, 000) to fund his campaign to contest for Senate, to represent the people of Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District; she sent the Senator the sum of $10, 000 through one Ante E. Okwong on the 18th of March, 2015, through a bank of America wire transfer which Ante E. Okwong acknowledged. The Senator also acknowledged receipt of the money (the sum of $10, 000) and promised to pay back by August 2015.
Since August 2015, he has bluntly refused several requests to pay and started threatening and blackmailing the said Nsedu. She got a lawyer involved who wrote several letters on her behalf to persons and institutions like the Senate President, the Archbishop of Methodist Church, Abuja where the Senator worships and is a knight; despite all these efforts to recover the money, the senator bluntly refused to refund the money, he rather resorted to threatening the woman, warning her that if she ever comes into Nigeria he will deal with her or harm her. Left without any option, she instructed her lawyers to approach the court to seek redress.
We were able to speak to Nsedu’s lawyer, First Baba Isa. He admitted that the case is in court. “Yes. We are in court. We have filed a writ to recover the said money and we have also filed a Fundamental Right matter to enforce her right to life which is being threatened by the Senator.”
We asked the lawyer if the matter was reported to the police. “Yes. The case of threat to life, especially, was reported at the Force CID, Area 10, Abuja and the case was assigned to one Inspector Ibe. I was told the Senator was invited and went to the police station to give his statement but nothing has been done about it for no apparent reason other than the suspect is a senator; so we have to go to court.” Barrister Isa also said that “You see this threat to her life by the Senator has made our client afraid to come into Nigeria to attend to some business concerns which she does almost annually and this has caused her millions of naira. Well, the matter is already in court and I will want to avoid commenting extensively on it. It’s just that things like these can make one really ashamed of being a Nigerian. A Senator, our Senator, I mean a Nigerian Senator should not be involved in this kind of issue, right?”
All efforts to get the Senator to comment on this wasn’t successful as his mobile number wasn’t connecting.
