CALABAR —The Nigerian Police has assured the general public that efforts have been initiated to arrest the communal crisis brewing between Usumutong and Ebom, warring communities in Abi local government of Cross River State NEGROIDHAVEN can report authoritatively.
This reliable piece of information was made available to our correspondent, Wednesday, through phone calls made to Mr Mohammed I. Hafiz the Commissioner of Police, Cross River State COMMAND. The state police boss disclosed that immediately information about the crisis between the belligerent communities got to his Command, officers were despatched to curb the situation.
Hafiz who denied rumours of any casualties, informed that there was an assault on some Ebom women who were going to farm by suspected Usumutong people. He added that the Divisional Police Officer and Area Commander have met with traditional rulers from both communities with the view to arrest the deteriorating condition.
His words, 'You know that place have a perennial problem: for many years they've been having their issues; when we heard about this problem, we quickly sent in some men, even the DPO was asked to mobilised.
'As I speak with you, today in our management meeting we discussed over it, and already the Area Commander, the DPO were to go and meet with all the traditional rulers. In fact, the Area Commander scheduled a meeting of all the traditional leaders of those communities around in order to douse all these tension and what have you.
'Some journalists were even calling to find out whether there were some casualties recorded, I said, as far as we are concerned there was no reported death but some women were assaulted by some suspected Usumutong people yesterday when they went to the farm.
'Ever since then the DPO and Area Commander have made frantic efforts with a view to make sure they arrest the situation by meeting with all the traditional rulers today. I believe they should be in the meeting or by now they must have finished the meeting. I am yet to hear from the Area Commander. As I speak with you, what I know is there is no death.'
Yesterday, crisis between Ebom and Usumutong started. This altercation has been long expected.
