18th February, 2019
His Excellency,
Sen. (Prof) Benedict Ayade,
The Executive Governor of Cross River State,
Governor’s Office,
Calabar.
AN OPEN LETTER TO HIS EXCELLENCY, THE EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF CROSS RIVER STATE ON THE CONTINUED MARGINALIZATION OF THE PEOPLE OF AKPET NO. 1, BIASE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA IN STATE APPOINMENTS AND PARTICIPATION IN GOVERNANCE.
Your Excellency,
While we commemorate with Your Excellency on the momentous successes attained during your time in office, we are constrained to make this representation in the light of the continuous marginalization of the people of Akpet No.1, Biase Local Government Area in the numerous and abundant appointments made by the State Government from the 29th day of May, 2015 to date. It is public knowledge that this administration has made the highest number of appointments in our recent history; from an enlarged cabinet to numerous Boards, Special Advisers and Special Assistants. However, it would appear that there is a conspiracy to tactically exclude the good people of Akpet No. I from governance and thereby further taking the government far from the people.
Furthermore Your Excellency, in spite of the numerous appointments made by you, particularly from Biase Local Government Area, only a relatively insignificant handful came from Akpet No. I. In fact, nothing speaks to this issue more than the 23-man Caretaker Committee recently constituted to oversee the affairs of the Local Government, none came from Akpet No. I. This is in spite of the fact that a community within the same Ward had three (3) people nominated into the said Committee.
This is more worrisome because there is no basis for this marginalization as the people of Akpet No. I cannot be found wanting in both competence and loyalty to the party and/or the Government. We have individuals as competent in Akpet No. I as they are in other communities in Biase Local Government Area. The people of Akpet No. I are also in the habit of voting en masse for the Peoples Democratic Party and have contributed enormously to support all programs of Your Excellency’s administration. It is also pertinent to state here that the Akpet/Abini Ward has the highest number of registered voters in Biase Local Government Area and Akpet No.1 has consistently provided the highest votes in the Ward in previous elections.
It is against this background Your Excellency that we make this correspondence, appealing to your Excellency to employ the instruments of your good offices, and in line with your administration’s agenda of inclusiveness to look into this issue, and ensure that the good people of Akpet No. I are carried along in governance, in order to make for inclusiveness and to do away with the feeling of discontent currently plaguing our minds.
While trusting that this letter would be given the expedited attention it deserves, we convey to you the assurances of the highest regards of the people of Akpet No. I.
Sincerely,
Enome J. Amatey, Esq., Pnm. ChMC.
