Determined to ensure smooth flow of traffic in the city of Calabar and the metropolitan, the Department of Public Transportation, DOPT, has cleared trucks and other vehicles obstructing traffic along highways in Calabar.
Godwin Nyiam, Director General of the agency, led a team of his men to Ikot Ishie, Mobil junction, Free Trade Zone and 8 Miles junctions to clear the road of illegal parking of vehicles.
Nyiam who gave instruction for a truck which was parked on the median kerb to be towed away said such reckless parking could cause needless accidents and loss of lives therefore nothing would be spared to keep the roads in the city safe.
"We are not doing this because we hate anybody but to protect lives and safeguard our infrastructure. Road are built with huge as sums of money so nobody who means well for the development of the state would consciously park a truck on the median and expects to be applauded".
The DOPT helmsman said the fight against illegal activities would continue until residents of the city particularly commercial motorists learn to obey traffic rules.
"l hear some drivers want to protest but before I started the operation, I wrote a letter to all union heads, held personal meetings with their chairmen so tell me what we are doing wrong?" He queried.
Nyiam assured that what the department is in the interest of all the commercial motorists inclusive and called for the understanding and cooperation of all.
"We wont shy away from our responsibility and we will do so within the ambits of the law and civility". He stressed.
