L-R: Decomposing corpse (L), Gov Ben Ayade (R)
Efio-Ita Nyok|2 March 2017
On Monday 27 February the lynching of an alleged car battery thieve was perpetuated at the southern axis of Calabar, Cross River State capital city.
As I write the cadaver of the unfortunate alleged criminal is decomposing at Yellow Duke Street almost bordering Musaha Street.
Incidentally, His Excellency the Executive Governor of Cross River, Sen. Prof. Ben Ayade, is celebrating his 49th birthday today. In fact, I just learnt there’s so much bustle around Government House and Governor’s Office in respect of Ayade’s birthday.
Whereas, the state governor is the chief security officer of the state and whereas security of lives and property is the primary responsibility of the government of any state, national or subnational, and whereas the rate of jungle justice is increasing at an alarming degree, it suffices to say that the state of security in the state is in an all time low! We have never had it this way before.

That, the corpse of the unfortunate alleged criminal is decomposing concurrently with the celebration of His Excellency’s birthday suggest the degree of irresponsibility on the part of the Ministry of Environment and its not-done-well Honourable Commissioner Mike Eraye.
Bowels of cadaver has busted! Empty dumpster and road suggests residents hardly use the facility because of unbearable stench
Granted that Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA) isn’t functional since the landlord shut down the place over the failure of the state government to renew rent, it does not sufficiently negate the fact that the not-done-well Eraye’s Environment ministry is supposed to swing into action and dispose the decomposing cadaver from the state capital city.
While we struggle with managing Lassa Fever, let’s not inflict an emergency of a sprawling dimension on the state. Environment ministry should dispose the decomposing body off the street for health reasons. Or, is Eraye telling us indirectly that His Excellency is deliberately celebrating over a decomposing cadaver?
Meanwhile, happy birthday Your Excellency!
