Saturday 24 June the management of the University of Calabar, Calabar embarked on a demolition spree of designated infrastructures in the New Library axis within the higher institution.

The building block bordering the Atiku Abubakar Lecture Theatre directly opposite the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, etc which housed the Secretariat of the Non academic Staff Union (NASU), UNICAL Chapter and which harboured office spaces/premises for various businesses ranging from typing, printing, binding, photocopying, photography services and charging of electronic devices, recharge card sales, snacks sales, soft drinks sales, etc as well has been finally demolished.

Accounts has it that the University authority had communicated through two previous seculars her intention to demolish the building for the purpose of constructing a parking lot for the newly created Faculty of Biological Sciences. However, while there was no specific date set for the demolition, Vice-Chancellor Zana Akpagu decided unilaterally to demolish the building owing to the protest the leadership of NASU embarked on last week. The demolition was executed under the supervision of prying eyes of officers of the Nigerian Police Force positioned at strategic location around the building.

Albeit, while the above rendition constitute the official reason for the demolition, the unofficial reason why the University authority decided to demolish the affected building was because she got wind of a notorious brothel that was operating right inside the building block. The brothel serviced the interests of the academic staff of the University who helped themselves with female students when their emotional tempo was highly charged especially when time wouldn't allow for them to proceed with their private affairs outside the University Community.

It is to safe face of an impending embarrassment that Professor Akpagu ordered the demolition of the structure without conferring with NASU leadership.
