2018 Diabetes Day: Cross River Government advocates early detection

Diabetes is a condition that impairs the body's ability to process blood glucose, otherwise known as blood sugar. This year, the world gathered to create an awareness campaign against the disease with the theme: Diabetes is a Global Concern.

In commemoration of the event, the Cross River State Government in collaboration with Arubah Specialist Hospital organized an exercise and workout titled Walk out Diabetes, where they discussed information, prevention, detection and management of Diabetes using a combination of pep talks and exercise routines.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Inyang Asibong, acknowledge that diabetes is as deadly as other disease plaguing the human body and blood stream, but proper awareness, early detection and management as well regular exercising are ways of combating the disease.

'Diabetes are group of diseases that result in high blood glucose, more than 425 million people live with this disease globally. It symptoms includes incessant urination, increased thirst, increased hunger and fatigue, but can be treated through a healthy diet and physical exercises or by insulin shots and anti-diabetic medications.

When left undiagnosed or untreated, it can often lead to a variety of other health issues, including heart disease, stroke, kidney damage, and nerve damage, she concluded.'
